Ultrasound is a therapy that uses sound waves to enhance the healing process.
Three primary benefits of ultrasound are:

  • Increased blood flow to injured tissue allowing the area to heal more quickly.
  • Reduced swelling and edema, which decreases pain and discomfort.
  • Gentle massage of muscles tendons and/ or ligaments in the treated area to help soften and remove scar tissue and restore proper range of motion.

Electric muscle stimulation (EMS) is another common therapy used in the chiropractic profession. EMS differs from ultrasound because it uses electrical current instead of sound waves to heal the injured tissue. Electrical current stimulates the muscle to repeatedly contract in order to fatigue the muscle. As the muscles fatigue they are able to relax allowing the adjustment to hold longer. Kinesiotape is becoming more popular in the treatment of sports injuries. K-Tape is not like athletic tape; it’s purpose is not to support injured joints. Its purpose is increase circulation and speed up the healing process. Kinesiotape reduces pain and swelling and increases range of motion. Kinesiotape lifts the fascia allowing the lymphatic system to absorb and reduce the inflammatory fluid. Once inflammation is reduced, pain is also reduced and range of motion is restored.
